North West Kent College

Grace Morris - Media Studies

Grace

My name is Grace Morris and I aim to study Event management at University combined with Marketing or Music and media management.

I hope by studying this I will achieve my goal to be involved with organising events such as music festivals and large scale concerts.

The reason I chose to enter the field of Event management as a follow on from my Btec national diploma course in media is because, I believe my skills in organisation and communication are some of my greatest.

I am dedicated to achieveing goals and my time management and organisation skills have been improving to a high standard.

I have been involved with the managing of events such as 'Black history month' Black History Month 2007 project logo in my local area Medway.

In this I helped by conversing with the general public and helping them get involved with events which represented different cultures such as Henna painting and african story telling. I also encouraged people from different cultures to mix and understand one another, although I did not organise the event I helped with the intergration of public at the event which I think is a key part of making any event move smoothly.

My unique qualities involve being able to find common ground with most people and communication. I also am very organised and very resourceful. I think a role as a manager would be good for me as I feel I am very good at encouraging and intergrating a team of people and also good at bringing out the best in people.

A project in my Btec national class was to demonstrate our skills that outline our future career. I chose to play a game in which I organised the class into seperate groups and the game was called 'Wizards, Giants and Dwarfs'.

Giants, Wizards and Dwarfs

Team Work     Communication

  • Divide the class into two groups, standing either end of the hall
  • Groups have 20 seconds to decide which of the three characters they want to be
  • On the whistle they stand opposite each other in rows about 5-8metres apart
  • On the second whistle they perform the action and the winners have to chase the opposition back to their safe zone
  • If they tag anyone, they join their team/or reward points per tag

Progression - Pupils lying face down to wait for the second whistle

Scoring - Giants win over Dwarfs - Wizards win over Giants - Dwarfs win over Wizards

The class first had to line them selves up in birthdate order aka 'June 15th then July 24th', but had to conduct this without talking and using their hands to show the month number and day number. I then divided them down the middle so the groups would be a mixture, they then played the game I had outlined for them and the winning team got a prize.

Although I did not organise a concert or musical event, I organised an event in which I showed my skills of intergration and organisation. And I also helped people to enjoy themselves.

I feel that as a person overall I am quite well balanced and open minded. I feel I have developed a great deal of self control towards my work related tasks and have also found ways to organise and plan events and tasks.

I am good at making people feel welcome and included and taking on board other peoples interests and needs. I feel this will aid me in the field of event management because I have found a balance between the two and the unique factor about me is that I care greatly that other people enjoy themselves and their points are heard.
